Giant hygro
Hygrophila corymbosa
Giant hygro
- Big, broad leaves
- Upright habit
- Fast growing
- Very hardy and undemanding
- Easily flowering in emersed culture
Emersed-grown plants of the genus Hygrophila can occasionally develop small, firm tissue growths ("pustules") on the upper and lower sides of their leaves. These are completely harmless and are not caused by pests or disease. These bumps will no longer appear on newly sprouted submersed leaves.

Description
This broad-leaved form of Hygrophila corymbosa is long known in the aquarium hobby, also known as Temple plant, Nomaphila corymbosa and Hygrophila stricta. It comes from swampy places in Southeast Asia and grows above and under water.
This strong stem plant is fast growing, undemanding and recommendable for beginners, however it's best placed in large, high tanks. It does not need strong lighting and grows also in hard, slightly alkaline water. A nutrient-rich substrate enhances its growth.
Emersed plants of H. corymbosa and other Hygrophila species from aquatic plant nurseries not infrequently have small "pimples" on the leaves, some of which have a sand-like feel. The cause of this is not known to us. These pustules probably occur under certain emersed culture conditions, but not on underwater leaves. One can therefore put such plants into the aquarium without hesitation; the newly developed submerged shoots no longer have these small bumps.
Hygrophila corymbosa is often used for "plant streets" in Dutch style tanks, it can also form a large, dense, branched bush when it is regularly pruned. It looks also well as half-emersed plant in open tanks where it develops many light purple flowers.
Hygrophila corymbosa is a stem plant of swampy locations that is widespread in South-East Asia, growing submersed in flowing waters and emersed on wet ground.1 Older names are Nomaphila corymbosa and Hygrophila stricta.1
Under strong lighting the fast-growing species forms sturdy, compact shoots, although moderate light is already sufficient for it.12 Moderately hard to hard, slightly alkaline water suits it well, and a nutrient-rich substrate and strong current promote growth.12 It is suitable for staggered groups in the midground or background.1 Plants supplied emersed usually shed their aerial leaves after transfer; when emersed it flowers pale blue to blue-violet. At first I had some concerns because the plant arrived pretty flattened, since the rest of the order was lying on top of it. (read more)

Great plants, strong and sturdy, they just look great
