Anacharis
Egeria densa
Anacharis
- Very fast growing, easy stem plant
- Deep green tone
- For coldwater and tropical aquariums
With the potted plant and/or bunch delivery methods, it is very important that the plant is not planted directly with invertebrates. The plant should be soaked for at least one week with regular water changes. The nurseries' source material for these delivery methods mostly comes from Asia. Invertebrates could be harmed when the plant is added to an established aquarium. There should be no problems with a new setup, but you should still carry out regular water changes here as well.

Description
Brazilian waterweed, also known as Argentine waterweed, is one of the best-known aquarium plants and has been for a long time. This submerged plant originates from the southern part of South America, but today it is found in many warmer regions of the world, in still and flowing waters. The stems, which grow over a meter long, grow loosely upright, often with bent-over shoot tips, and branch at regular intervals. They are densely covered with linear, translucent, deep green leaves. The shoots anchor themselves in the substrate with a few long roots, but also grow free-floating.
Although Egeria densa is considered a particularly fast-growing, undemanding aquatic plant, it only looks really good with a complete, ample macro- and micronutrient supply, at least medium light intensity and temperatures that are not too high (ideally 18-25 °C). It is also suitable for coldwater aquariums and tolerates temperatures down to near 0 °C. CO2 fertilization is not absolutely necessary, but a severe CO2 deficiency can lead to unsightly whitish lime deposits on the leaves due to biogenic decalcification. Like other stem plants, this waterweed is easily propagated from cuttings. Its very fast growth makes frequent trimming necessary if you want to prevent it from overgrowing the water surface.
This large waterweed species is often used for breeding and biotope tanks, beginner aquariums or the initial planting of newly set-up tanks. With its fast growth, it produces a lot of oxygen, competes with algae for excess nutrients and offers cover for the aquarium animals. With its dense foliage and deep, rather dark green hue, it also looks decorative in planted aquariums, for example as a backdrop for light green plants.
Dense-leaved waterweed, or Egeria densa, is one of the most well-known aquarium plants. This submersed plant has spread globally and has been found in several warm waterbodies in Germany, too. However, its origins lie in Brazil, Argentine and Uruguay. It prefers deep, slow-flowing or stagnant water. The hobbyist will probably find this plant in almost any fish store. It is even for sale as a pond plant in garden stores. During the warm season it grows well there, however, it is not reliably hardy in Central Europe.
Waterweeds (Egeria, Elodea, Hydrilla, Lagarosiphon) are often mixed up. You hardly find Elodea species in the hobby, though.
The most common species in the hobby can be differentiated as follows:
- leaves partially in whorls, partially irregular alternate
=> Lagarosiphon
- leaves only in whorls
=> Egeria, Hydrilla
- leaf margin smooth... (read more)
